New Bridget Jones Book – V. Disappointing. Calories, hangovers & men have been replaced with toddlers, nits & toyboys. Will we still like Bridget ‘just as she is’?!

Helen Fielding’s latest Bridget Jones installment ‘Mad About A Boy’ is finally out today. It was dubbed to be the most anticipated book of the year, however it has received quite a battering from reviewers and critics.

The Daily Telegraph has called it ‘A clunking disappointment‘ while other reviewers have slammed is as ‘disappointing, tired and inauthentic’.

The Telegraph critic Sarah Crompton goes on to say that ‘every line feels full of effort,’ and that Fielding is on ‘well-trodden territory’, adding: ‘If she is about to enter the fray, she had better have something original to say.’

Other reviewers slammed the book as ‘disappointing, tired and inauthentic’ and the Sunday Times newspaper reviewer Christina Patterson said:

‘It isn’t just the style that jars… the random capital letters, the subjectless sentences, the mannerisms that now seem awfully tired.

‘It isn’t just the rather hysterical tone. It isn’t even the pile-up of clichés: the room that “looked like a bomb had hit it” or the stare “like a rabbit caught in the headlights”.

‘Or the fact that Fielding will never just give two or three examples — of funny self-help books, of children’s names that sound like Latin declensions — when she can give 10. It’s the fact that I hardly believed a word of it.’

Fans were also outraged when they found out that author Helen Fielding had killed of Mark Darcy, leaving our heroine a widowed mother-of-two, and took to twitter in droves to express their horror:

However, despite all this negativity surrounding the book, it is still at the top of Amazon’s bestseller list…

We have to admit – even though we are miffed that Mark Darcy has been killed off and the reviews are awful – we STILL want to read the book.

Perhaps Ms. Fielding knew exactly what she was doing after all!
