Leading UK talent and modelling agency Talent Management has just heard about announcements from Ricky Gervais – on both his blog and the David Letterman chat show yesterday – that he does not intend hosting the golden globes next year. When asked by Letterman if he was “done hosting” the awards he replied: “I think so, for now.”

In his very own comedic style Gervais went on to explain to Letterman: “I did it the first time because it’s a huge global audience for a comedian and I like writing gags. I did it a second time because I thought I could improve on the first. And I wasn’t going to do it a third, but a lot of people were saying ‘he’ll never be invited back’, so I did it to annoy them.”

Many models and booking agents here at Talent Management hold a genuine affection for Gervais, having watched him in highly original and entertaining shows such as The Office, Extras and The Ricky Gervais show over the last few years. However, it is widely accepted that his hosting talents are considered, by some, an acquired taste at best and simply inappropriate at worst – particularly the American audience who are traditionally less likely than the Brits to engage in the type of cutting, sarcastic humour that this multi-award-winning comedian, actor, writer, producer, director and musician is known for.

His daring approach to comedy has certainly caused controversy in the past. For example, at last year’s Golden Globes he raised eyebrows with his reference to Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s Dad”, and further comments around the Carrey and McGregor film I Love You Philip Morris: “Also not nominated, ‘I Love You Phillip Morris.’ Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay… so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then.”

Despite tongue in cheek suggestion that he has seen The Kings Speech actor Colin Firth “punch a little blind kitten”, Gervais appears to have managed to avoid deeply offending too many people this year. The only negative comments that staff at Talent Management have noticed are from Justin Beiber fans over quips he made about the young star. Earlier in the week Ricky’s Twitter page attracted comments like this one from an angry fan: “Ricky Gervais. I hate you. I love Justin Bieber!! Do not mess with Justin I kill you.”

Despite this Gervais clearly felt that many of the Golden Globes 2012 audience were finally coming round to his sense of humour.

However, the biggest star to have come out of the aftermath of the Golden Globes Awards 2012 has got to be the amazingly cute dog pictured with Gervais above, apparently enlisted to ‘protect’ him from Bieber fans.

“I’ve got enough protection against Bieber fans now”, the star joked on Twitter.
