‘Good Girls Don’t Get Fat’: Weight Obsessions Explored
A New Book by Robyn Silverman, Ph.D, has gained the attention of many of the girls at our modelling agency this week.
While the attitude of our particular agency has always been an inclusive one there is no denying that weight obsessions are rife within the industry as a whole. For many models the constant pressure of maintaining a generic ‘model’ look can fuel weight and eating issues, turning them into unhealthy obsessions.
Models Direct is proud to be part of an increasing new attitude in society as to what is attractive and what should be represented by the media. Along with brands such as ‘Dove’ and ‘Ultimo’ we believe that every shape and size should be represented in the modelling industry and will always promote healthiness, whatever body type a model may be.
Body image issues can begin to effect girls very early in their lives, ‘Good Girls Don’t Get Fat’ highlights this scary fact with a series of true stories involving real young girls who are affected by such issues. Much of the time a parent will have had an impact on this, often without even realising. The message we send as parents and industry members is so important.
The full title of Silverman’s book is; ‘Good Girls Don’t Get Fat: How Weight Obsession Is Messing Up Our Girls And How We Can Help Them Thrive Despite It’. It has already been hailed as a book that ‘every mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend should read’ by parenting advice website Plugged in Parents and Models Direct can see why. Silverman engages the reader in a number of different ways and the inclusion of interviews, charts and quizzes give the book a unique appeal.

“Silverman explores weight obsession in teenage girls, outlining ways that parents can help their daughters succeed in a “thin-is-in” world. She believes that girls should be taught to swap these harmful ideas for positive mottos (which she calls “Asset Girls’ Ten Commandments) stressing confidence and achievements. Silverman outlines the causes behind an unhealthy body image and what parents can do to combat it.” – Healthygirl.org
