How To Spot An Eating Disorder In Your Child Model
Eating disorders are extremely common in the modern Western world.
They range from the highly publicised conditions of Anorexia and Bulimia, to the less known ‘Sleep Eating Disorder’, and for those whose loved ones aspire to become a model they are a reality that simply cannot be ignored.
Recent studies suggest that at least 40% of today’s models may be suffering from eating disorders, but a lot can be done to prevent them and the suffering that they cause. Many eating disorders will go unnoticed by the colleagues, friends and family of those affected by them, but if symptoms are noticed early enough help can often be sought before they cause any lasting damage.
Inspired by the recent and controversial book ‘Maggie Goes On A Diet’ the child modelling team at Talent Management have put together a list of early signs and symptoms that may suggest your loved one is at risk of developing an eating disorder.
- A preoccupation with their body and weight
- Excessive or compulsive exercising
- Making excuses not to eat, cutting food into very small pieces or pushing food around the plate and ‘picking’ at meal times.
- Visits to the bathroom immediately after eating
- Mood swings
- Rapid weight loss/gain
- Limiting of the diet to very specific types of food
- Taking appetite suppressants or laxatives
If you notice any of these symptoms Talent Management would recommend taking a look at this advice.
