So you’ve made it to the auditions, fantastic! Now how do you make the most of your moment to shine? Talent Management has come up with our top eight audition tips to help you on your way.

Be prepared

Whatever it is that you’re auditioning for, be as prepared as possible. Unless you are requested to perform an improvisation, be sure that you know your performance piece well and have practiced it, preferably in front of others, prior to your audition. If you need to warm up do so in plenty of time and be sure that you have any costume, props or equipment that you will require.

Be punctual

Arrive in plenty of time. This may seem obvious but bad planning can really be your enemy on the day of your performance. Be up in plenty of time and be sure that you know exactly where you are going for your audition.

Relax

Remember that you do this because you love it. The worst thing that can happen is that you will be unsuccessful and no one ever died from that! If you are suffering from nerves that’s OK and to be expected, it can even improve your performance sometimes. Severe nerves can be alleviated with breathing exercises, so if you are particularly jittery try taking some deep breaths before you perform. Aim to have fun and always approach your audition with a positive attitude.

Short and sweet

Stay within the specified time. Those auditioning you will probably know within seconds whether or not you are the right person for the job so keep it short and sweet unless advised otherwise.

Accent your strengths

You know what you are best at, so if you have the chance to then show off your talents in their best light.

Know your limits

Likewise, this may not be the time to try something new. Resist attempting something that you know is beyond your abilities.

Mind your manners

Always remain polite. Not only to those auditioning you but to fellow performers and artists, it’s simply good form.

Stay positive

Whatever happens at the audition remain positive, even if you are unsuccessful this time. Learning to deal with rejection is essential for any performer or artist, so see this as a valuable learning experience whatever the outcome.
