Oscar de la Renta is at it again, criticising the First Lady’s fashion choices, but we think he’s being too harsh.
Michelle Obama is usually praised for her fashion choices, and America loves it when she wears young American designers, but surely she shouldn’t be criticised for wearing British?
Well Dominican Republic-born Oscar de la Renta thinks so.
He has recently spoken out about Michelle Obama’s choice of an Alexander McQueen gown, worn to a state dinner with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
The First Lady also wore an ensemble by Roksanda Ilincic, a London-based designer, during the visit.
“My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?” de la Renta said.
But this isn’t the first time the world-renowned fashion designer has commented on Obama’s attire.
Back in 2009, when she toured Europe with the President as part of the G20 summit, European designers took precedence in her fashion choices.
In response to this, de la Renta said: “Our industry right now is having a very difficult time. I think it would be great if the First Lady dressed in American styles. There are a lot of talented people here too.”
We think that Obama shouldn’t be judged for wearing labels outside of America, after all, she has played a huge role in supporting US newcomers such as Isabel Toledo and Thakoon.
